Similar to collarbones and ribs, your ankles are another area with particularly prominent bones. However, pain is all about nerve endings, not about what area’s bonier, so if you're planning to get a tattoo directly over your ankle bone, be prepared for a similar level of pain to the one you can experience on meatier areas. Slightly above or below the bone toward your heel can be a bit more mild, but keep in mind that the skin is still quite thin.

According to researchers from the University of Chicago, 15% of tattooed females have tattoos on their ankle.
